Telehealth nursing practice is an integral part of ambulatory care nursing.

Telehealth nurse with headsetThe National Certification Corporation (NCC) discontinued its Telephone Nursing Practice certification exam in 2007. Nurses who were certified through NCC can maintain their certification by meeting NCC’s recertification requirements. Contact NCC for additional information.

Although there is no telehealth nursing certification exam, the ambulatory care nursing certification exam contains content on telehealth nursing. AAACN believes telehealth practice is an integral part of ambulatory care nursing and we encourage all telehealth nurses to take the ambulatory care certification exam, which is broader in scope.

Because telehealth nurses provide nursing care to patients who are in ambulatory care settings (e.g. home), they must possess the knowledge and competencies to appropriately provide ambulatory care.

Ambulatory care nursing certification, especially with the enhanced telehealth component in the exam since April 2009, is the career credential for all ambulatory care nurses. Ambulatory care nursing certification is and will continue to be the gold standard credential for any nursing position within ambulatory care.

The American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) offers many study resources to help you prepare for the exam.
